We have had some sad news lately about some of the animals we love. When we returned home from New Orleans Jared's parents called to tell us Harley, their 7 year old Basset Hound, had died unexpectedly the night of the Sugar Bowl. He had surgery recently and an infection afterwards but had been on the mend. The story about how he died was just awful and we were both crying on the phone hearing about it.
Poor Harley was a rescue dog that J's parents adopted and quickly became part of the family. J's Dad called him "our furry brother" and would tell us how much he missed us. Jared has grown up with Bassets and weekly talks about the day that we get a Basset, and I cringe. They just aren't the kind of dog I would prefer, but oh how those Storcks love them. We spent some time with Harley back in August last year at the cabin.
Harley, we know J's parents aren't the same without you and we sure will miss you!
A few days later we heard about Maddy from The Land of Syd suddenly becoming ill. Thankfully she is doing better and sounds like she is going to be just fine. All this sad news about our furry loved ones reminded me that I hadn't talked about our little cat that joined us here at ECGML about a year ago. She is just the cutest little kitty ever. And we are giant cheeseballs about her.
Every day she greats us at the door with a meow and a flop on her side for some back scratches. If she can get a treat from you, which Jared does every time, she will. Then there is the obligatory cuddle time where you must rub her belly. Most of her time is spent sleeping or lounging on the couch looking out the window or in J's chair. She loves chasing string or a laser pointer right around dinner time. Every now and then she will run through your legs while you are walking to try and trip you. My least favorite thing is when she is in "pounce mode" and will grab your leg and take a nibble when any delicious lamb chops walk by.
Recently she has started sleeping at the foot of the bed. Mostly because I put a small fleece blanket there for her to cuddle up on. And after she meows at the moon, or whatever she is talking to, she heads to bed with us.... and we both just love her to pieces.
Back in January we had a big change. We now had a pet living with us and I was not happy. Hailey had lived with my parents since she was 3 years old and even though she was my cat, their house was her home.
I was worried...
worried that she would hate our small little apartment we call home...
worried she would be lonely all the time going from a busy, full house, to our place that is the opposite...
worried that she would be puking all over (since she had been doing that recently in VA)...
And although there was a transition period, several weeks where she would meow at closed doors like they were portals back to her home in Virginia, mostly it has been good. I guess Mom knows best. It has been nice having my little princess kitty living with us. She now seems so much happier here in Ohio.
As you can see, we seem pretty happy with her too!
It was just me here this week. Well, me and Hailey. It is nice to have a pet to come home to even when she wakes you up at 5am every day for breakfast.
J is off in Chicago for a surgical board review course where he is in lectures for 12 hours a day and dreading every minute of it. Even thought he most likely won't ever practice as a general surgeon, he is taking the board exam. I guess it can't hurt to have options.
In the meantime I was solo in Ohio where I filled my time with dinner dates with my Aunt and Grandmother-in-law, my friend Stacey, walks at the metro parks, cleaning, organizing, and some lounging by the pool.
It was weird being here all alone. I still feel "new" to Ohio... probably because I lived in Virginia for 22 years before moving. But I am working on making it feel like home. And it just takes a while... one day at a time.
We have a new addition here at East Coast Girl... Hailey the cat.
I adopted Hailey (briefly known as Phoenix when I couldn't decide on a name) on my 21st birthday back in college. Since then she has lived with Jared and his roommates while I was living in the sorority house, then with me in the townhouse while in school. But mostly for the last 7 years she has lived with my family.
This is a HUGE change for us and her. She has been meowing a lot. Seems to be looking at closet doors for entrance into the rest of our house or perhaps a portal back to her home in Virginia. She seems a little sad, lonely, and is looking for other people and animals.
I worry about her being alone so much. So, wish us luck and we will see how this goes.
